In 2013 we entered a major partnership which has allowed us to open up on-line access to 1250 Hebrew manuscripts from the collection, making them freely available to scholars, researchers and the public worldwide. This phase of the project - Phase 1 - will end in June 2016. In 2015 we have entered a new partnership with the National Library of Israel that will widen the scope of the project by extending on-line free access to a further 860 Hebrew manuscripts held in the British Library collection. We are keen to recruit a *Cataloguer* to ensure the successful continuation and completion of Phase 1 as well as start off the exciting Phase 2 of the programme, which will end in 2019. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a small team creating the metadata and contextual information for 860 manuscripts chiefly in Hebrew and other Jewish languages using the Hebrew script, such as Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Persian, Judeo-Italian, etc. You will additionally create basic catalogue records for all remaining BL Hebrew manuscripts comprising c. 900 items and about 7,000 fragments from the Cairo Genizah. You will be responsible for creating catalogue records in digital format for manuscripts that were acquired in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection embraces many areas of Hebrew literature both religious and secular, and its geographical spread takes in Europe, North Africa, the Middle and Near East. You will be using basic TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) metadata supplied by the National Library of Israel which you will research and enhance according to modern practices and standards used in the British Library. You will monitor the ingest of metadata and images into the British Library systems. You will be able to demonstrate: - Excellent knowledge of Hebrew - A research degree in classical Hebrew or relevant subject - Experience of cataloguing Hebrew manuscripts - Information technology skills, knowledge and experience of TEI and XML formats - The ability to understand and apply complex standards for the cataloguing of digital manuscripts - Good oral and written communication skills in English will be essential - The ability to work independently and in a team - A track record of working to strict deadlines.
