As a perspective from the other side, in recent years, our Archives has 
received donations from a number of synagogues that are still very much in 
existence, versus from defunct or shrinking congregations, which had previously 
been more typical.   While there are issues to be worked out regarding privacy 
and intellectual property, the storage, security and broader access to their 
materials have proved to be compelling factors.  So you may want to explore 
some local archival repositories.
