Sheryl Stahl asks about Jewish content in Gene Wilder’s fiction. Although very
few people mention this film, I think one of his greatest early performances
was his portrayal, opposite Margot Kidder, of an Irish manure collector in
“Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx.” I have regularly used this film
in courses on Jewish history because of the remarkable way in which the working
class hero is taught about, identifies with, and then mis-appropriates his
“own” history at the urging of a rich American college student who comes to
enjoy his “native” culture. It is a charming and less controversial way to get
students to think about the use and mis-use of history, about the “real
experience” of study abroad, and about cultural progress generally. The DVD is
available cheap (but intermittently) from Amazon.
