You may want to include the J.Levine Co. in this project. My husband's great-grandfather started this bookstore in 1890 on the Lower East Side, and it is currently thriving in Midtown. It's mentioned in note 3 of the article by Leiman in Tradition.
I remember visiting J.Levine on Eldridge Street many times when my father-in-law Harold Levine ran the store with his 2 younger brothers. The current owner is my husband's cousin Danny Levine. I'm sure he's the best person to contact for documenting the history of the store. We had the chance to meet Aaron Biegeleisen (the nephew) and Mr. Biegeleisen (the senior-who just celebrated his 90th birthday). We enjoyed listening to the stories he told about how his grandfather came to this country and set up the business in the early 1900s. They even have a file of letters, invoices and other ephemera dealing with the store that dates back to the “early days”. It would be wonderful if someone in NY could take senior Biegeleisen’s oral history and video it. The firm has been such a part of the Judaica book scene, it would be a shame to miss this opportunity. We did mention to both of the Biegeleisens that it would be a wonderful thing to have done. I’m am hoping someone will like the idea and do it. Maybe the NY Jewish Historical Society or some other organization-even a senior high school project. It would be wonderful to have.
