Hi Robbin, For what’s worth (since we’re not a day school), we don’t charge fines for overdue books. We print overdue notices every week and send them home with the students. If a child has 3 overdue library books, the 4th book that they check out has to stay in the classroom. I usually follow up with the parents at this point via e-mail or phone (and/or ask the teacher to do the same). Over the summer, we mail notices home for any outstanding library books from the school year. If the books are not returned by the first day of school, we bill the parents synagogue account $18/item and take it off the child’s library account. This system has worked very well for us. Of the 1200 books that we circulated to our preschool and religious school students last year, only 9 were still outstanding by the first day of school this year! Let me know if you want to discuss further. I am personally very much opposed to overdue fines. In fact, my public library eliminated them last year!

We are reconsidering our overdue fine policy, and would like to know how other schools handle this. Do you charge overdue fines? Do students lose borrowing privileges at some point if their books are overdue? Thank you. Robbin Katzin Hillel Torah North Suburban Day School Skokie, IL
