Hello All --- I was asked to report the responses to my original query (see below), and I received *one* strong recommendation: *PICTURE STORIES FROM THE BIBLE; The Old Testament in full-color comic-strip form*, edited by M.C. Gaines.
I did purchase it but now that I have it in hand I am troubled by the content and the presentation. Originally published in 1943, the copyright was renewed in 1970 and 1979. If you see it on Amazon, many of the comments are from adults who are thrilled to see the book they remember from childhood. “Endorsed By Clergy Of All Faiths.” Extremely “old school” , this really does look like a bound comic-book. While colorful and action-packed, the drawings are old-fashioned and static, very different from what we see in contemporary graphic novels. The Editorial Advisory Council dates back to the original publication date (1943) and clearly reflects those times – among other things, of the ten Advisors, none are women. On the other hand, this volume is inclusive and may be the only way some children will learn the material. The librarian who recommended the book told me that boys love it! So, there you have it. Not my cup of tea, but maybe that’s just me. They continue to be such a big hit with boys who are usually non-readers, and I’d love to be able to offer something as a natural follow-up to the series. The Hereville books are great for girls, but not so inviting to boys. Suggestions? Amy Turim Temple Emanuel Kensington, MD
