Great observation. Picture Stories from the Bible was originally a comic book
series, publisher by Max Gaines (a Jewish New Yorker who is also credited with
inventing the American comic book). Actually, it was 2 series. The first was
subtitled "Old Testament edition" ; the other was subtitled "New Testament
edition". The illustrations are colorful, but given the low bar set for comic
book illustration during the "Golden Age", they seem subpar compared to modern
