Shalom

One of our finance professors is doing research on finance in the early
modern period. Right now, he is interested in the expulsion of Jews and
Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula. He had read up on the general
background and noticed the proclamation of the expulsion of the Jews
prohibited them taking coins with them. He is interested to know if they
instead took bills of exchange through which the bearer would be able to be
given an equivalent amount of money in another locale (e.g. the
Netherlands). His hypothesis is that Jews and Muslims, and forced converts
to Christianity who left Spain may have left wthl these bills of
exchange..and that this led to an outflow of capital from the Iberian
Peninsula. He is trying to locate places that store these bills of
exchange or notarized documents concerning bills of exchange. I expect
registers of such bills or relayed documents would also be useful to hom

So, if you know of any places that have collections of such documents,
please reply to me and him. (I am copying the professor on this message.)

"[I]n Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror,
murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci,
and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love. They had 500
years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo
clock."--Harry Lime in the film "The Third Man".
