In reference to Emily's posting concerning fake Judaica in the Islamic world....
I just had a case of a colleague asking for verification of some suspicious "old Judaica" from the Near East. Her radar went up because of the Hebrew. I sent the image to an internationally known expert to ask about it. Here is what he wrote: -" sorry to say but the items are outright forgeries produced in the last years mostly in Islamic lands and are "discovered" in sites where Jews once lived... The Hebrew contains hundreds of mistakes; the images mix together Jewish motifs from Poland with those (supposedly) from Islamic lands - whatever they find "Jewish" in old Judaica catalogs or the Internet is good for them to copy and present it an 'antique'..." Buyer beware!!! Gail "The content and views expressed in this email reflect my personal views and not the views of the Library of Congress." Emily's post: FYI. This was shared with me by a UCLA cataloger. This is spam - do not open any of the attachments. The writer states that it is written in Ancient Hebrew (used Before the Common Era) and dated from the Ottoman Period (1400-1900), which of course does not make sense and raises suspicions. Last month the Jerusalem Post published an article on the "flourishing industry of Jewish manuscript forgeries" that "supposedly once belonged to Jewish communities in Islamic lands," (see https://www.jpost.com/printarticle.aspx?id=579435 ). The email received today is from the United Arab Emirates. Best regards, Diane Diane Mizrachi, Ph.D. Social Sciences Librarian Librarian for Jewish and Israel Studies Charles E.
