The book in question is "P is for Palestine" by Golbarg Bashi. In this alphabet style book, the I is for Intifada. It was scheduled to be read by the author as a children's book program at the Highland Park Public Library.
Highland Park is a small community next to New Brunswick, home of Rutgers University. The town of approximately 14,000 is about 25-30% Jewish. This program was scheduled by one of the librarians who has since admitted that she did not pre-read the book before booking the author. Here are some links to media coverage of this controversial program which has been postponed until the Library Board of Trustees can meet and determine whether or not the program can move forward. https://www.mycentraljersey.com/story/news/local/2019/05/20/p-palestine-storytime-highland-park-nj-shelved-now/3744018002/ https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/u-s-library-postpones-reading-by-p-is-for-palestine-author-after-local-objections-1.7219229 https://abc7ny.com/society/childrens-book-p-is-for-palestine-stirs-controversy-in-nj/5305695/ https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/video/critics-blast-p-is-for-palestine-childrens-book-as-anti-semitic/vp-AABAdpe -- *Marsha Goldwasser* Librarian [email protected] Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple 222 Livingston Ave New Brunswick, NJ 08901 732-545-6484 www.aemt.net
