Dear editor of Hasafran,

My name is Anat Shmulovich. I am a professional classical pianist living in New
Jersey.
I would greatly appreciate if you would publish my material in Hasafran.

Here is the story about the first love, daily struggle, and hope for one last
miracle (which indeed had come).
My double life in the repressive Ukraine, surviving an orphanage in Moscow,
becoming a professional classical pianist, a four year love affair with Natan
Sharansky, and immigrating to Israel. Is it the making of a great fiction
story? No. It’s the story of my life as I told in my memoir Where the Night
Train Ends. The book starts and ends with dramatic scenes on a train, which
explains such title.

My 65,000-word memoir will appeal to a cross-section of readers. Students of
history would be drawn to the exploration of seminal moments in history: the
death of Stalin, the post-Stalinist era, the Moscow Summit, the human rights
movement of the 1960’s and 70’s. It can almost be read as a prologue to
Sharansky’s own book “Fear No Evil,” which continues his story after our
separation. “Where the Night Train Ends” can also be seen as a companion piece
to Emil Draitser’s “Shush! Growing Up Jewish under Stalin: A Memoir.” Young
people, especially those vulnerable teens who can be targeted by bullies, will
be drawn to my story as it demonstrates my resilience and perseverance in the
face of oppression. As a first-hand look at the teachings of professors L.
Naumov and B.Berlin, this book will also attract pianists interested in the
“yellow brick road” of the Russian Piano School.
Accompanying the manuscript are my personal photos from that era, including
several with Natan that have never been published elsewhere. The manuscript has
been given a professional edit by Elizabeth Barrett
