Before Covid, we were most active during the school year. (Ours is a small
synagogue and our library has about 4500 items.) The few items checked out
during the summer was negligible and easily tracked, so that was the time. I
was generally able to do it myself in a couple weeks. For a bigger collection,
I'd suggest getting help.
The actually inventory is a bear, but easier if you can walk around with a
digitized shelflist on a labtop or tablet. Depending on the size of your
collection, printing it out would be crazy. (This will date me, but I actually
remember shelflists in catalog drawers, which was even more fun!)

Hello Colleagues,
Those of you in synagogue libraries, do you have any experience doing an
inventory of your library? We are looking to do a complete inventory of our
collection, a daunting prospect!
I’m interested in hearing from those who have done an inventory how you went
about doing it. What was your process? Did you close the library? For how
long? Did you have volunteers help? Students? How do you gently request
patrons return all of their checked-out (and not-checked-out) library materials
before the inventory?
I’m going my research on it, but I’d really appreciate hearing about your
experiences. Thank you!
Best,
Jane
