Vanessa, For a reading list(not for subject heading) it can be called Israel wars 2023/24. The Israeli media calls it Iron swords (Harvot barrel). Netanyahu suggested to change it to Milhemet T’kumah. I’ll not go there so I don’t translate it.

That’s an interesting question which I’ve also been pondering in a different context. I maintain a reading list, currently called Resources on the Israel-Hamas war. I am planning to expand it to include material on Hezbollah etc and to change the title to reflect that, but I’m not sure what to change it to. The best I’ve been able to come up with is Resources on the conflict in the Middle East, but that’s a bit too broad.

Best wishes

Vanessa

Hi, Andrea, thank you for your question. Can you please clarify what you mean by "current war"?

The war that began as an outgrowth of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel is established in the Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) thesaurus as "Israel-Hamas War, 2023-". The scope note there specifies, "Here are entered works on the military actions that resulted from the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, primarily taking place in Gaza but also other areas in the region. Works on the the land, sea, and air attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023 are entered under October 7 Hamas Attack, Israel, 2023." The Israeli name for the war, Operation Swords of Iron, is listed as a variant name for this war. (For all relevant subjects on these topics, please see here.)

The official war on Hezbollah, with the Israeli name Operation Northern Arrows, also known as the Israel-Hezbollah War or the Third Lebanon War, only started a couple weeks ago, so I'd be surprised if materials are already published on this war. Recall that literary warrant is a prerequisite for establishing new LC subject headings. That being said, we (the Israel/Judaica Subject Authority Cooperative [I/J SACO] funnel) are following events as they unfold in order to propose a new subject heading for this specific war.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with further questions. Kol tuv and gmar hatimah tovah, Jasmin

I need a subject heading for materials on the current war - at first it was called the Israel-Hamas War but that is no longer adequate. Does anyone have a heading they use- the October 7 War, or something like that? Andrea Rapp, Cincinnati
