I had library assistants with library degrees from Russia, the Philippines,
and Egypt, and it was hard to break into a professional position. I think
the guy from the Philippines finally got a reference position at a public
library; I lost track of the woman from Russia; and the woman from Cairo
never got beyond a library assistant position. I would say it will be
harder to get a professional position in the U.S. without an ALA accredited
MLS. If you have something else to offer, like a language or a graduate
degree in another subject, you'll find it easier to find a professional
position. I have an English friend who retired from UCLA and had an
English degree and then got an American MLS to get a professional
position. Emily
