I don't really have that much against the original design.  Sure, versions are
often represented as a set of numbers rather than a decimal number.  Having the
version be a decimal number isn't incredibly hateful, only mildly annoying.

Trying to do both, at the expense of things Just Working, and for marketing
reasons... that's just horrible.
