If I have the timeline right, and I think I do, the first Macs that
shipped with USB2 ports came after the last Macs that were capable of
booting OS9.
Therefore, this isn't really even a software hate -- you could put
Ubuntu and iPodLinux (or whatever it's called) on the same hardware
and
it still couldn't be expected to work reliably.
Plugging the iPod into a TiBook hoses OS 9 and works in OS X.
