Actually, the whole application is hidden, all of its windows.

which means it is not minimized to the dock, or in fact listed
anywhere in the ui.  The best part is that it's quite possible to not
even know what you hid, and there is no way to find out.
When I do that the application icon in the dock is ghosted out. I'm
not attempting to minimize the hatefulness of option-click hiding the
application, mind you, but there is a user interface element that
indicates the application is hidden.

That is fortunate for you, but it is not true for me.  I'm not sure what
the subtlety (or stupidity) of the software arrangment is that is
different.

It seems to have been the case in Mac OS X 10.4 (dock icon ghosted) but now in 10.5 it no longer indicates that an app is hidden.

go figure.
