I recently read http://www.cs.vu.nl/~dick/CVS.html#History which
describes the early history of CVS. I found it striking that (a) it
was designed for a team of only three people, so didn't need to be
concerned with scalability to large groups; (b) it was used for the
very first version of a new project, so managed to get away without
any use of branches; and (c) the working hours of the specific people
involved were largely disjoint, so they rarely needed to commit
anything simultaneously.

None of this should be a surprise to those who've had the misfortune
of using CVS.
