Thanks for the exposition.   I like it for case of gets of many columns into 
table with many deletes.

I must say though that I'm surprised for the case described above -- few 
entries with two families and no deletes -- that the difference is even 
discernible, never mind that its 2x.  Are you sure its because of the above 
described changes and not something else about the new code path?  Perhaps 
something is being skipped or there is dumb bug in old code?
