I disagree. How does the Thrift connector and the REST connector differ 
architecturally? They are both separate daemons. They both are clients to
the HBase cluster but serve other clients through a mediating interface.
The only difference is we made REST into a contrib because at the time
the goal was to move both connectors out to contrib. Thrift was going to
get that treatment but it was deferred. 

As far as I can see the only argument here is that REST is somehow second
class to Thrift.
