Handling of binary keys, an experimental transactional hbase and a bunch of critical bug fixes is the short answer. For more detail, you'll have to read the CHANGES.txt (thats that I just did -- smile).

If you can, wait on 0.19.0 hbase, a week or two more I'd say, it'll have performance improvements that you'd likely be interested in.

Good on you Tim,

I haven't been following the progress as much as I'd like.
We're using hbase 0.2.1 at the moment, and wondering what are the major
improvements in 0.18?
Is the better batching of bulk row updates included? Does that cover when
using map reduce as input/output as well? Has there been any major bug fix /
stability improvements? Just after a quick overview really. I really should
read the jira's more often.
