Making periodic snapshots by shutting down your cluster and doing a copy in HDFS is effective enough. You may want to look at this also: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-897 There's no live backup or snapshot capability in HBase now. You may want to monitor these issues: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-7 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-50 One of these could produce results that support hot backup at the file level. - Andy
