Hi Andre, HCP used the COGA/SSAGA-IV version of the SSAGA and that DSM-IV criteria were used in the scoring, except for smoking where we report Fagerstrom criteria. We did modify the COGA/SSAGA-IV to omit some items such as the recurrent arrests item for alcohol abuse - it is extremely hard to get two or more arrests in a 12-month period for alcohol-related offenses without meeting criteria for alcohol dependence (which would preempt the diagnosis of DSM-IV alcohol abuse).

In the reference manual, and in some associated papers (e.g. Barch et al, 2013, Neuroimage 80, pp 169-89), the semi-structured assessment for the genetics of alcoholism (SSAGA) is reported as using DSM-IV criteria. However, the references that are cited for this instrument (Bucholz et al 1994 and Hesselbrock et al 1999, cited in both documents) indicate that the SSAGA is based on DSM-III-R criteria. Could you please confirm which is the case? Two related questions are: 1. Was a modified version of the SSAGA administered? 2. Was the SSAGA-II used rather than the SSAGA?
