Thanks Uma for the digging and analysis for me! Yes I will fix the failures and
checking style issues as well. You're right the {{length == 0}} case should be
particularly handled. Here I will keep the current logic for the case, fixing
the failures, and leave it to be refined for HDFS-9705.
