Getting the information through REST APIs is a good idea but I believe it is
complementary. It should be a fairly straightforward change, and I'll be happy
to work on it once the REST APIs lands on the trunk.
You have a good point that we should put the library within the distribution.
I'll put bootstrap and jquery into the trunk in a separate patch.
I'm less worried about the browser compatibility. These libraries have been put
into production for years by big companies (e.g., LinkedIn uses dust.js,
Twitter uses Bootstrap, Google / Microsoft uses jQuery). The issues of browser
compatibility are well addressed by the vendors.
