Why was this incompatible change committed to branch-2? Normally, we deprecate
methods for one major release and then remove in the next. Since 2.2 went GA,
we shouldn't be removing any deprecated methods until 3.x.
I know that DFS is limited private to MapReduce and HBase, but we need to be
serious about compatibility now that we're GA.
