Hi all, I just want to re-chime in, this time regarding the number of LCGFT terms we can add to the record. I was taught that it is cataloger’s judgment. Here is the instruction in LCGFT J110 Section 4:

I was just pointing out the hierarchy in the LCGFT vocabulary, as Haggadot (Liturgical books) is a narrower term of Liturgical books. I agree that 3 genre terms could be excessive; I was not suggesting that one should use it in this instance, but rather that one could. I think the conclusions that Caroline came to are sound and a good model for all of us as we embark on using LCGFT with more confidence! ________________________________ From: Shinohara, Jasmin <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Sent: Thursday, February 19, 2026 3:13 PM To: Miller, Caroline <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>; heb-naco <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>; Gottschalk, Haim <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>; Lili Brown <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Subject: Re: Prayers and devotions in LCGFT Hi, Just to clarify, I don't think that the genre term for Haggadot "stems from Liturgical books" as much as Liturgical books is being used as a qualifier for Haggadot to aid those who may not be familiar with the term, similar to how Jewish law is used to qualify Responsa... But yes, Liturgical books is another valid genre choice for a book of prayers. Though I'm not sure I would go to the trouble of adding 3 genre terms for a siddur — Prayers, Liturgical works, and Devotional literature. In theory, one could also add Religious materials, for a total of 4 genres... Are genres meant to be assigned in a similar manner as subjects, preferring the more specific term? If so, I'd think just Prayers would suffice for a siddur/mahzor. -- Jasmin ________________________________ From: Heb-naco <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> on behalf of Lili Brown via Heb-naco <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Sent: Thursday, February 19, 2026 2:47 PM To: Miller, Caroline <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>; heb-naco <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>; Gottschalk, Haim <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Subject: Re: [Heb-NACO] Prayers and devotions in LCGFT Another hat to throw into the ring: Liturgical books I am not sure if that helps in this situation, but wanted to bring to your attention in case it does! Without knowing the resource in-hand, you definitely can use 2 (or more) LCGFT headings. “Devotional literature” is heading that can be applied to many books, and one I use for resources that are limud yomi in nature. However, the only draw back to Devotional literature is that the 670s have a Christian bent to it. I hope this helps.
