My opinion is that it is much better to add directional characters, because that is the proper way to keep compatibility with other applications, including both copy-and-paste on the desktop (which, I think, was mentioned on the OO.o.il mailing list) and automatic processing of the OO.o XML files. What MS did is, essentially, embracing and extending Unicode. I would hate to see OOo go that way. However, I do not think doing it properly is very simple. In general, if the user changed her mind three times about which language she's going to write next, you do not want three markers in the generated text. You want the editor to figure it out, and only write the markers where necessary. Making this work intelligently and consistently seems, on the face of it, far from trivial.
