Frank, regarding 3 language attributes (Western, CTL, Asian): Why can't we unify those 3 language attributes into one, since only one of which is relevant at a given time?
Imagine typing a mixed Hebrew/Latin or some mixed CJK/Latin/Hebrew text. Everything you need to do in order to get correct line breaks and a working spell checker is to set the correct languages at your paragraph style and start typing. You don't have to care about switching the language attribute all the time. If some client of the paragraph information (e.g., the spell checker, thesaurus, break iterator, etc.) asks for the language at a given position in the string, we do a quick mapping {Unicode characters} -> {Latin, CTL, CJK} and return the appropriate language attribute. That's a fairly convenient way to handle mixed script documents.
