YOu can connect OOo to other systems using the UNO interface. The UNO
interface has implementations (usually called "bindings") in C, C++, Java,
Python and StarBasic. See "OpenOffice.org 1.0.2 Developer's Guide" for
detail.

The macro facility in OOo is available in all tools. In general you will
not be able to use MS Office macros, you will have to re-write them.
