I don't see a way from a quick look in the Makefiles, but No, we always build HelenOS into the same directories where the sources are.
I started porting the build system from make to Waf (Python-based build tool that supports out-of-source building) but due to lack of time it is still unfinished. I am not able to say how much effort is needed to finish that. Please, can you elaborate more what is behind this question? Converting all the Makefiles to support out-of-source-tree build would be probably time consuming but maybe the issue occurs only for some specific scenario...
