I did encounter this problem using the sunfreeware.com packages. The problem 
was resolved by _not_ using the 8.x pcre package (ie the one you are using) and 
use the 7.9 version of it instead.

I've been installing my own version of pcre.  I built it, Cf and a few others 
at the same time.  The chief environment I work in is so varies that 
dependencies are the bane of my existence.
