I just got a similar message under the same conditions (worked
before, worked after, with no change to the configuration files
inbetween), this time with Cfengine 3.1.0 and not with a
pre-3.1.0 SVN build:

cf3:/var/cfengine/inputs/stg_dns.cf:87,0: Broken variable syntax or bracket
mismatch in string (`N/
s$(
), near token ''
cf-agent was not able to get confirmation of promises from cf-promises, so
going to failsafe

Time to file an official bug report?
