I do not encourage the use of preserving permissions based on the remote server's masterfiles. Cfengine is meant to allow the agent to work in the absence of a central authority. Preserving permissions breaks that independence. I believe you can do a single edit and expand if, instead of a template file, you keep the template in a variable.
