OK, fair enough. I see the various points. For various reasons, some technical, some political/managerial for our group, I'm staying with importing a template file (rather than defining the file contents in a variable), and in my second-stage edit_line/expand_scalars I am now setting the permissions, ownership, etc. in the usual "perms" fashion. Thanks for the replies.
