I use either Winzip (www.winzip.com - I paid $50 years ago, and have been getting free updates ever since; well worth it) or Cygwin (www.cygwin.com) 'tar zxf <file>' to unpack .tar.gz files. Emacs without Cygwin is like fish without water; also well worth it. -- -- Stephe
