Unpatched Emacs is already quite close (it includes cua-mode, for
example). Emacs' goal is to be useful, not compliant (though that's a

The very first problem I stumbled on with Emacs was that it
sometimes stole my Alt key.

I've never had trouble with the Alt key on Emacs. Perhaps I expect
less from my Alt key that you do from yours :-)

If you never had that then you are surely correct ;-)
