Where did you get gift-0.1.9? This is outdated++. Unless you are using a very old linux with out-of-date compilers you will not get 0.1.9 to work.
My suggestion is cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[email protected]:/sources/gift co gift to get the most recent sources. When you have done this, please get back to this list.
