The only thing I can say is, I had similar problems with an ill-administred, partly upgraded RedHat 5.2 box. When I upgraded egcs, libstdc++, binutils, glibc from RedHat 6.1, all was fine. You may give that a try. If you do, let us know the outcome of that.
