It not your fault that you don't see anything. The indeterminate progress bar is still missing in GNUstep. There even was an implemenatation that somebody developed on Cocoa and donated to GNUstep, but this did require two backend functions missing at that time. One of them should now be there and I am (theoretically) working on the second one. I will try to dig up the old code...
