Hi Peter,

Hi,

I can't tell anything about the errors, but have you tried:
  chainloader (hd0,msdos5)+1
  boot

Are you sure that there is a bootloader in the first byte(?) of the fifth
partition?
As far as I know chainload does only load something into memory and tries to
execute it.

What OS (or "code") do you want to run from this partition?

Regards,

sashab

grub> ls
(hd0) (hd0,msdos7) (hd0,msdos6) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0)

The machine has only 128 MiB and the Debian installer declines to work.
I can add memory and install Deb Wheezy ... although in principle Grub
should be able to function without Linux.

BootManager a preferred alternative.
  http://www.ocp.inf.ethz.ch/wiki/Documentation/BootManager
Installation of Grub was convenient when the hdd was being partitioned on
the Debian system; not essential.

This machine also doesn't shutdown cleanly and I wonder whether it has an
anomalous behaviour of BIOS or hardware. Beyond my knowledge really.

Thanks for the interest, ... Peter E.
