No idea about that, and I wouldn't know how to go about determining
that. Chris Baines' hunch is that there may be a I/O bug in guile that
only reveals itself in interaction with btrfs. It's unlikely that btrfs
itself is to blame.

I experienced similar problem with empty *.drv files in /gnu/store happening 
every now and then, which went away (no reoccurrence for at least few months 
now) after trying few things:

* making sure ssd/nvme drive firmware is updated, some samsung nvme drives have 
problems :(

* making sure underlying filesystem (btrfs, ext4, ...) is not mounted with 
discards option, instead TRIM is delegated to fstrim service

* there was a bug in shepherd failing to remount root filesystem read-only, 
which is now fixed for sometime now.
