I was combining logging in as another user from root (su -l /USERNAME/) with starting a shell as a user 'sudo -u /USERNAME/ `which bash`'4) Make sure you can switch to the gast user from root with 'sudo su -l -u gast'. This will verify that everything about the account is good except the password.
