Hi,

It sounds like you are using the latest version of e2fsprogs.
There was an incompatibility in that version that was fixed in
grub 0.5.92.1 and the latest hurd package.

If you really want to install the tar ball, you will need to
downgrade you e2fsprogs or pass -o mke2fs.

Check the mailing list archive around the begining of the year
for the whole problem description (debian.org/MailingLists/....)
