I thought the authentication server was the principal security service
within Hurd, ensuring user processes can only access files to which they
have been given rights...

I thought someone had got the pfinet thing going? if so then there is some
kind of networking in The Hurd, albeit it will externally look much the same
as a standard Unix offering.

Sorry to barge in like this, imho there were some basic defines that were
coming over a bit on the inaccurate side.
