Well I spent about 100 hours this weekend getting hurd running on one of
my boxes. The actual time was spent doing stuff like swapping broken
hardware, transferring the installation from machine to machine etc, but
it was all in aid of getting a working Hurd :-)
1. Installation
I just want to point out some suggestions for the Easy guide:
The URL for dpkg has changed from:
ftp://ftp.debian.org/project/dpkg/dpkg_1.4.1.1_i386.nondebbin.tar.gz
to
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/project/dpkg/dpkg-1.4.1.13.tar.gz
On my Redhat 6.0 system I was unable to compile the whole dpkg package, it
got stuck on some part of the docs. It did however build (and install) the
binaries necessary to do the cross-install.
It might also be useful to have instructions for installing grub on a hard
disk. This is very easy with a new version of grub, all you have to do is
make sure you have the files found in (on the hurd)
/usr/share/grub/i386-pc/
copied into
/boot/grub
Then boot with a newish grub floppy (I don't know how new), set the root
to point to the hurd partition (or it can be a linux partition with these
same files in /boot/grub)
and go
setup (hd0)
Grub will respond with two commands that you have to type, and then you're
done.
2. Development
(As in my earlier post) I'm not sure what packages I need to do
development on hurd. Is there a list?
Somewhere in the docs I read about the hurd it said that the cthreads
package would ultimately be replaced with pthreads. Has this been done, is
it going to happen?
Is there any work in progress on virtual consoles? Is there anything I can
do to help make this happen?
