Let me know if you get X11 running. I thought there were still problems
running it on the Hurd.

Thanks for the suggestions and help. I managed to
get The Hurd working this afternoon by using Chris
Lingard's suggestion to reformat the disk using
e2fsprogs v1.12. I did discover that the bootloader
(19991023) does deal with compressed files - by
accident when trying to duplicate the process at home.
The next task is getting X11 to run properly. So
far the OS is really interesting and I'm hoping to do a
little work on it.
