Hello,

My name is Joel Joseph and I am a researcher at InfoValley Incorporation. I am
presently having trouble with installing gzip on my Solaris 7 (x86) platform. I am
installing gzip on my Solaris 7 because I need to gunzip a "gcc" package, which I
downloaded. I was told by other resources that I need to download alot of gnu
software, so I started off with gzip because alot of things that I download are
primarily in a " .gz " extension.

I downloaded a tarred ( .tar ) version of gzip off of an ftp site. I then moved that
file to a directly called "gzip" in my root ( / ) directory. I untarred the file
successfully, and I then followed the instructions in the "INSTALL" text file and I
ran the configure option ( ./configure ) . When I typed this, other files such as a
Makefile and Makefile.in were created. At this point, I have no idea of what to do.
The instructions then ask me to run the "make install" command. However, the computer
will not let me run the "make" command, I even typed in the path of the make file in
the command line then typed install e.g. ( /usr/lib/bin/./make install ) and it gave
me other errors as follows:

         srcdir: Command not found
         VPATH: Command not found
         CC: Command not found
         ASCPP: Command not found
         INSTALL: Command not found
         variable syntax

I tried the same command as above, but instead of "install" I replaced it with
"Makefile" and "Makefile.in", or I would even just type " ./Makefile " or
"Makefile.in" , but I got the same errors as above. I have no idea where to go from
here. I downloaded another .shar version of gzip, and ran it. However, it brought me
back to the same problem that I left off from earlier.

I even downloaded a "gnumake" file, but it was a .gz extension file. I obviously have
no way of using that if my gzip is not installed. Somehow, I need to get gzip to work
on my solaris, but I am stalled at this moment with this problem, if you can help me
in anyway, I would be more than appreciative. Please email me if you have a solution,
and even if you do not have one just let me know that you couldnt solve it for
confirmation purposes. If you can call me, that would be even better, my number is
610-992-8743. Please reply at your convenience.....

Thank you...

Joel Joseph
