Try

$(OBJECTS_DIR)/%.o : $(SOURCES_DIR)/%.o makefile

Now, if you set VPATH to include $(SOURCES_DIR), I'd expect what you
originally had to work.  However you did set VPATH to include
$(SOURCES_DIR), so I'm not sure.
