If it is an experiment, why not (Stephen did the same and he had some LDAP functions bindings in the process). Anyway, if so I suggest compiling 3.1 from source: it's not going to be buggy, and the File/Directory methods were rewritten (so they are better, and you don't have to forward-port them in the future).
